JAPAN 2026

Ten days in the
Japanese Alps

22 - 31 October  /  Kiso Valley  /  Komagane  /  Shirahone Onsen  /  Kamikochi

The shape of the trip

One rental car, three bases in the mountains with two nights in each, and very little time spent getting from one place to the next. The idea is to see the Japanese Alps at the peak of the autumn colours without spending the holiday in a car or on a train.

6nights in the mountains, two in each of three places, so you only pack up every other day
2cable cars up into the high mountains: the Komagatake ropeway, and the Shinhotaka ropeway if you choose it
8hof driving in total, roughly, spread across the whole ten days
3nights in Tokyo: two at the start to recover from the flight, one at the end, by Tokyo Station, before the early bus to the airport

Open the full route in Google Maps

The route is a loop through the mountains of Nagano. After two quiet nights in Tokyo, you take the train to Matsumoto, pick up a car there, and drive south, stopping at the old post town of Narai-juku on the way down to Tsumago. Tsumago and Magome sit on the Nakasendo, the Edo-period road that linked Tokyo and Kyoto through the mountains, and you walk the old road between them. From there you cross over to Komagane, at the foot of the Central Alps, where a ropeway lifts you to a high mountain bowl at 2,612 metres. Then you drive north to Shirahone Onsen, a small hot spring village hidden in a gorge, stopping at Hirayu or the Shinhotaka ropeway on the way, and from Shirahone you spend a whole day walking in Kamikochi. Finally you drive back to Matsumoto, return the car, and take the train to Tokyo.

Roughly eight hours of driving across the whole trip, and on four of the ten days you do not drive at all.

Roughly when things happen

The same ten days, laid out hour by hour like a calendar. Exact times are used where a booking gives one; everything else is a reasonable guess at pacing. Scroll sideways for later days, and down for later hours.

Times shift as bookings and weather settle – treat this as a shape for the days, not a timetable.

Haneda airport at night

DAY 1· THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER

The night flight

An evening flight out of Singapore, landing in Tokyo in the middle of the night, with a room already waiting for you.

Afternoon

Leave for Changi in good time. Your flight, Scoot TR 882, leaves Terminal 1 at 17:15.

Evening

In the air. The flight takes 6 hours and 50 minutes and lands at Haneda Terminal 3 at 01:05 Tokyo time, which is already Friday.

Night

Take a taxi straight to HERE.Tokyo in Kanda, about half an hour at that hour. The hotel is booked from the night of the 22nd, so the room is yours as soon as you arrive and you can go straight to bed, probably by about half past two.

Flight
Scoot TR 882. Singapore Changi Terminal 1, Thu 22 Oct 17:15, to Tokyo Haneda Terminal 3, Fri 23 Oct 01:05. 6h50.
Driving
None.
Public transport

Where you sleep
HERE.Tokyo, Kanda (booked), 2 nights. A small modern hotel about two minutes' walk from Kanda station, and five minutes from Akihabara. Normal check-in is 15:00 to 21:00, so tell the hotel in advance that you will arrive at around 02:30 on the 23rd. See it on Booking.com.
A street in Yanaka, Tokyo

DAY 2 · FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER

Rest, and do almost nothing

A quiet day in Tokyo. It is there so that you are both properly rested before the driving starts the next day.

Morning

Sleep for as long as you like, because nothing is planned for the morning.

Afternoon

Start at Kanda station, around 14:00, and print the paper tickets for both Azusa trains at a JR East ticket machine, so that tomorrow morning you can go straight to the platform. Then a slow walk around the city with nothing booked and no time pressure. One place worth the trip is Dashi Okume at Azabudai Hills, which your friend recommended. It is a shop where you mix your own blend of dashi, the Japanese soup stock, to take home with you.

Evening

Dinner with Si's friend in Tokyo. After a short night, it is best to keep it relaxed and not too late, because tomorrow's train leaves at 08:00.

Driving
None today.
Train tickets
Collect all four paper tickets for the two Azusa trips (Saturday 24 October, car 12, seats 2A and 2B; Friday 30 October, car 11, seats 1A and 1B) at a JR East reserved seat ticket machine at Kanda station. Bring the two JR East confirmation emails, which have a QR code for the machine, and the card you paid with. Do not use the JR Central machines at Tokyo or Shinagawa stations, because they cannot print these tickets.
Public transport
The metro for getting around the city. Kanda station is on the Ginza metro line and the JR Yamanote and Chuo lines.
Where you sleep
The same room at HERE.Tokyo, Kanda. See it on Booking.com.

You stay two nights in the same Tokyo hotel, so there is no packing today and you can leave your bags in the room all day.

Narai-juku

DAY 3 · SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER

Into the Kiso valley, by way of Narai

A scenic train ride into the mountains, then two short drives with a stop at a quiet old post town in between.

Morning

From Kanda, the JR Chuo line takes you straight to Shinjuku in about fifteen minutes. Take Azusa limited express number 5, which leaves Shinjuku station at 08:00 and reaches Matsumoto at 10:37; your seats are 2A and 2B in car 12. If you did not collect the tickets the day before, be at Shinjuku by 07:30, because the station is huge and there may be a queue at the ticket machines. The ride is beautiful in its own right, climbing out of the Tokyo suburbs and running past vineyards and mountain ranges as you head into Nagano.

Afternoon

The rental car is booked with Times Car Rental for 11:00, a few minutes' walk from Matsumoto station. The rental desk is next to the exit of the Times car park, not the entrance. If the train is running late, phone the shop, because a booking is cancelled automatically when you are more than an hour late without calling. This is her first drive on the left, and it starts gently. After about an hour you reach Narai-juku, a post town on the Nakasendo with a long street of old wooden inns and shops. It is as handsome as Tsumago but has only about a third of the visitors, so it feels calmer. An hour is enough to walk its length and have lunch or a coffee. Then drive another hour south down the Kiso valley, beside the river through forested hills, to the house in Nagiso, which is just 3 km from Tsumago. Check-in is from 16:00.

Evening

Drive seven minutes into Tsumago and walk around the village once the day-trippers have left. Tsumago is one of the best-preserved post towns on the Nakasendo: its main street of dark wooden inns and shops looks much as it did two hundred years ago, and it is at its most atmospheric in the early evening when it empties out. The house does not serve dinner, so ask the host to book a restaurant for you ahead of time.

Driving
Matsumoto to Narai-juku, about 1 hour. Narai-juku to Nagiso, about 1 hour. Her first drive on the left, on easy valley roads.
Public transport
JR Chuo line from Kanda to Shinjuku, about 15 minutes. Then Azusa limited express number 5, Shinjuku 08:00 to Matsumoto 10:37. Booked: car 12, seats 2A and 2B. Paper tickets, to collect from a JR East ticket machine before the train leaves; the easiest is the day before, at Kanda station. Bring the card you paid with and the confirmation email.
Rental car
Times Car Rental, Matsumoto Train Station (booked). Pick up Sat 24 Oct at 11:00, return to the same shop Fri 30 Oct at 11:00. A compact petrol car or petrol hybrid (Toyota Raize, Toyota Roomy, Mazda2, Nissan Note or similar) with room for two large suitcases. Full insurance with roadside help, an ETC card for the motorway tolls, and English GPS are all included. 49,870 yen including tax. Free cancellation until 17 October. Bring your licences and passports to the desk.
Where you sleep
tsumugi tei, Nagiso (booked), 2 nights. A renovated wooden house, one minute from Nagiso station. You have the whole house to yourselves, with free parking. See it on Booking.com.
The Nakasendo trail

DAY 4 · SUNDAY 25 OCTOBER

The Nakasendo walk

An 8 km walk, mostly downhill, along the old highway that connected Kyoto and Tokyo in the days of the samurai.

Morning

Drive to Tsumago and park there. Take the local bus up to Magome, a village built on a steep hillside with a stone-paved main street, then walk the Nakasendo trail back down to Tsumago and the car. The path runs through cedar forest and bamboo, past old stone paving, small shrines and two waterfalls. Your friend did this walk and says it is still just as beautiful. Allow about three hours. Start after nine o'clock so the morning frost has time to melt off the stones.

Afternoon

Spend the rest of the day in Tsumago at your own pace, looking into the old inns and craft shops, or simply rest at the house.

Evening

A second night at the same house, so there is nothing to pack and nowhere to be. Dinner is at a restaurant booked ahead through the host.

Driving
Nagiso to Tsumago and back, 7 minutes each way.
Public transport
Local bus from Tsumago up to Magome, about 25 minutes.
Where you sleep
The same house, tsumugi tei in Nagiso. See it on Booking.com.

There is a luggage service that carries bags between Magome and Tsumago, about 1,000 yen per bag, dropped off by 11:30. You will not need it, because your bags stay at the house, but it is good to know it exists.

The Atera river

DAY 5 · MONDAY 26 OCTOBER

A green river, then the Central Alps

An easy day: one optional walk by a river, one drive over the mountains, and an afternoon at a hot spring inn.

Morning

Pack up and leave the house. If you feel like it, drive half an hour to the Atera valley, where a clear, emerald-green river runs between granite boulders under the trees. An easy path follows the water, and the autumn leaves should be at their best. This stop is optional; skip it if you would rather arrive early and rest.

Afternoon

Drive about an hour and a half across to Komagane, in the Ina valley on the far side of the Central Alps. Your inn, Futari Shizuka, sits on the high ground of Komagane Kogen, looking out across the valley to the Southern Alps. Check in and do nothing at all: this afternoon is for the hot spring. The inn has a garden open-air bath, planted with wild mountain flowers.

Evening

Dinner at the inn, which serves Kyoto-style kaiseki, a long meal of small courses made with fresh local ingredients from Shinshu. Breakfast and dinner are included for both nights.

Driving
Nagiso to the Atera valley, about 30 minutes (optional). Atera valley to Komagane Kogen, about 1 hour 30 minutes. The inn is about five minutes from the Komagane motorway exit.
Public transport
None.
Where you sleep
Futari Shizuka (山野草の宿 二人静), Komagane Kogen, Akaho (booked), 2 nights, breakfast and dinner included. The inn is right by the Komagane-bashi-minami bus stop, about ten minutes' walk from the Suganodai bus centre for the ropeway. See it on Booking.com.
The Senjojiki cirque in autumn

DAY 6 · TUESDAY 27 OCTOBER

Up to Senjojiki

A bus and a ropeway lift you almost a kilometre straight up, to a high mountain bowl at 2,612 metres.

Morning

Walk about ten minutes to the Suganodai bus centre, or ask the inn about its shuttle. Private cars are not allowed up the mountain road, so everyone takes the bus from here. It climbs for about 30 minutes to Shirabidaira, where the Komagatake ropeway starts. The ropeway climbs 950 metres in seven and a half minutes, the biggest height difference of any ropeway in Japan, to Senjojiki station at 2,612 metres, the highest ropeway station in the country. Go early, because the queues for the bus and the ropeway grow through the morning in autumn.

Afternoon

Senjojiki is a cirque, a great bowl scooped out of the mountain by an ancient glacier, ringed by jagged peaks. What you do depends on the weather. If it is cold or cloudy, walk the easy loop around the floor of the bowl, which takes about an hour and is almost flat. If the day is clear and there is little snow, you can climb out of the bowl towards the summits, a hike of four to five hours. Snow is possible up here from mid-October, so bring your crampons in the day bag.

Evening

Back down the mountain and a long soak in the inn's private hot spring bath, then the second dinner at the inn.

Driving
None. The car stays at the inn.
Public transport
Bus from Suganodai to Shirabidaira, about 30 minutes, then the Komagatake ropeway to Senjojiki, 7 minutes 30 seconds. A return ticket covers both the bus and the ropeway.
Where you sleep
The same room at Futari Shizuka, Komagane Kogen. See it on Booking.com.

At 2,612 metres it will be well below freezing in the morning, much colder than in the valley. Take every warm layer you have, plus gloves and a hat. The ropeway stops in strong wind, so check the forecast the night before.

Shinhotaka Ropeway

DAY 7 · WEDNESDAY 28 OCTOBER

North to Shirahone, two ways

A longer drive north through the mountains, broken by one of two stops, and a hot spring inn in a gorge at the end of it.

Morning

Breakfast, check out, and drive north. Choose on the day, depending on the weather and how you feel. Option 1, Hirayu: drive about 2 hours 20 minutes, with time to walk to the Hirayu Great Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the area, and have lunch in the hot spring village. Option 2, Shinhotaka: drive about 3 hours to the Shinhotaka ropeway. Its cable car, which has a two-storey cabin on the upper section, takes you to 2,156 metres, where you can have lunch with the full panorama of the Northern Alps in front of you. The ropeway closes in strong wind, so on a bad-weather day choose Hirayu.

Afternoon

Drive on to Shirahone Onsen, down a side road into a steep wooded gorge, about half an hour from Hirayu. The water here is milky white and smells faintly of sulphur, and local lore says three days in it buys you three years of good health. Check in at Sasaya. Your room is a detached wooden house, moved here and rebuilt, with a ten-mat tatami room and a two-mat veranda.

Evening

Book a slot for the private bath when you check in. It is free, and you have it to yourselves. Then dinner: the autumn menu is built around matsutake mushrooms, the wild pine mushrooms that are the great delicacy of the Japanese autumn, served four different ways, with a shabu-shabu beef course added.

Driving
Komagane to Shirahone by way of Hirayu, about 2 hours 20 minutes of driving. By way of the Shinhotaka ropeway, about 3 hours.
Public transport
None, apart from the Shinhotaka ropeway if you choose it.
Where you sleep
Sasaya (笹屋), Shirahone Onsen (booked, paid), 2 nights. Detached Japanese-style room, dinner and breakfast included, free private bath. Paid in full, SGD 1,914.39. Booking T074F5DF3EE48, in Chen Si's name. Address: Azumi 4182-1, Matsumoto. Phone 0263-93-2132. Open in Google Maps. The inn's own website.

Check in by 17:00. The inn serves dinner to a fixed schedule and will treat a late arrival with no phone call as a no-show. On the Shinhotaka option, leave Komagane early.

Kamikochi

DAY 8 · THURSDAY 29 OCTOBER

A day in Kamikochi

About 20 km there and back along the Azusa river, almost completely flat the whole way, in the most beautiful valley in the Alps.

Morning

After an early breakfast, drive about fifteen minutes to Sawando and park there. Private cars are not allowed into Kamikochi at all, which is a big part of why it has stayed so quiet and unspoilt, so the last stretch is a 30-minute shuttle bus. From the bus terminal, walk to Kappa Bridge, the wooden footbridge over the river in the middle of the valley, with the Hotaka mountains straight above you. Then walk on to Myojin, where there is a small shrine beside a still pond, and to Tokusawa, an open meadow with old trees. In late October the larch trees in the valley turn a bright golden yellow.

Afternoon

Carry on to Yokoo, where the path ends and the serious mountain climbs begin, and then turn back the way you came. It is about six hours of walking in total, with no climbing and nothing difficult, just a long and very satisfying day outdoors. Check the time of the last shuttle bus back to Sawando when you arrive in the morning, and keep an eye on it.

Evening

Back at Sasaya, the private bath again, then the second night of the autumn menu. Nothing else at all.

Driving
Shirahone to Sawando and back, about 15 minutes each way.
Public transport
Shuttle bus from Sawando to Kamikochi and back, about 30 minutes each way.
Where you sleep
The same room at Sasaya, Shirahone Onsen. The inn's own website.

This is the one day that really depends on the weather. There is no spare day, so if it rains hard, do a shorter walk to Myojin and back instead.

A shop in Kagurazaka, Tokyo

DAY 9 · FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER

Out of the mountains

The journey back to Tokyo, with a free afternoon in Matsumoto and one special dinner waiting at the end of it.

Morning

Have one last hot spring bath before breakfast, then leave Shirahone at about 09:15. Drive to Matsumoto, through the mountains and down along the river, and fill the tank with regular petrol near the station, because the car goes back full. Return it to Times at Matsumoto station by 11:00. For the GPS, use the map code 75821191*51 rather than the phone number, which can send you to the wrong place.

Afternoon

Right after returning the car, put the suitcases in a coin locker at Matsumoto station, so you can walk around the town with nothing to carry. Without the car, you have four free hours in Matsumoto. The castle, one of the few original castles left in Japan, with its black wooden keep reflected in the moat, is a short walk from the station, and the old town around it is a nice place for lunch. Then take Azusa limited express number 42, which leaves Matsumoto at 15:10 and reaches Shinjuku at 18:07; your seats are 1A and 1B in car 11. From Shinjuku, the JR Chuo line takes you to Tokyo Station in about fifteen minutes, and the hotel is a six-minute walk from its Yaesu side. Check in, drop the bags, and head out to dinner: Nihombashi station, four minutes from the hotel, is on the Tozai metro line, which runs straight to Kagurazaka. The evening is fairly tight, so keep the luggage light.

Evening

Dinner is booked at Kagurazaka Sushi Yasaka at 20:00, two seats at the counter. It is a small restaurant serving Edo-style sushi, the traditional Tokyo style. You will have the chef's top omakase course, where the chef chooses and serves each piece in front of you, and it includes the house speciality, the Yasaka "bakudan". The table is yours for two hours. Kagurazaka itself is a charming old neighbourhood of narrow stone lanes, and a lovely place for a last evening, just the two of you.

Dinner
Kagurazaka Sushi Yasaka (神楽坂 鮨 弥栄), Fri 30 Oct 20:00, 2 people, counter seats. Omakase course, 22,000 yen per person including tax, plus 8% service. Address: 3-7 Akagi-Motomachi, Shinjuku, Kagurazaka ODA Building, ground floor. Phone 03-6265-3338. Open in Google Maps. If you cancel on the day, you pay half the course price, or the full price if you do not call.
Driving
Shirahone Onsen to Matsumoto, about 1 hour 15 minutes, down the valley beside the river. This is the last drive of the trip. Return the car full, at Times Matsumoto Train Station, by 11:00 (GPS map code 75821191*51).
Bags
Coin lockers at Matsumoto station: on the Castle (Oshiro) exit side, on the 2nd and 3rd floors, outside to the left of the stairs and by the MIDORI entrance, and on the 1st floor at the Alps exit. Most take 100-yen coins; there is a change machine in the 2nd-floor waiting room, and some lockers take a Suica card. If the lockers are full, you can book a bag drop nearby in advance with ecbo cloak.
Public transport
Azusa limited express number 42, Matsumoto 15:10 to Shinjuku 18:07. Booked: car 11, seats 1A and 1B. Paper tickets: collect them in Tokyo together with the outbound tickets, so there is nothing to do at Matsumoto station. Then the JR Chuo line from Shinjuku to Tokyo Station, about 15 minutes. For dinner, the Tozai metro line from Nihombashi to Kagurazaka, and back.
Where you sleep
karaksa hotel colors Tokyo Yaesu (booked), 1 night, free cancellation. Address: 1-5-13 Yaesu, Chuo-ku. About six minutes' walk from the Yaesu Central exit of Tokyo Station (through the Yaesu underground mall to exit 23, then 100 metres), and four minutes from Nihombashi station. The hotel's website.
An airport terminal at night

DAY 10 · SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER

Home

One very early alarm, and after that the day takes care of itself.

Morning

A very early start. The airport buses to Narita (Airport Bus TYO-NRT) leave from the Yaesu side of Tokyo Station, a short walk from the hotel, starting at 05:00. Aim to be on a bus by about 05:30, so get up at around 04:45. The ride takes 65 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, which puts you at Terminal 1 at around 07:00, in good time for your flight, Scoot TR 885, at 08:50. The buses before 06:00 cost 3,000 yen each, cannot be reserved, and take cash only, because the ticket office is not open yet, so keep 6,000 yen in cash ready the night before. Check the exact departure times on the bus company's website the day before.

Afternoon

In the air on the way back to Singapore. The flight takes 7 hours and 40 minutes.

Evening

You land at Singapore Changi, Terminal 1, at 15:30 and are home in time for dinner.

Flight
Scoot TR 885. Tokyo Narita Terminal 1, Sat 31 Oct 08:50, to Singapore Changi Terminal 1, 15:30. 7h40.
Driving

Singapore signed the 1949 Geneva road traffic convention, which is the one Japan recognises. That means a standard International Driving Permit from AA Singapore is fully valid in Japan. It costs about S$20, you can walk in without an appointment, and it is done in a day.

YOU / FRANCE

A French international permit is not accepted here.

France signed a different convention, so Japanese rental desks will refuse a French International Driving Permit. What you need instead is an official Japanese translation of your French licence from JAF, the Japan Automobile Federation. It costs about 4,000 yen and takes about two weeks by post.

Get her permit first: that alone makes the trip possible. Your translation is the backup that lets you take turns at the wheel.

Always carry your original licence together with the permit or the translation. The rental desk will check both, and so will the police if you are stopped. When the JAF translation arrives, check that your name matches your passport and that the licence number and date of birth match your French licence.

Bring your passports to the rental desk as well. Times needs to see the date you entered Japan, so if you go through the automatic gates at Haneda, ask the officer for an entry stamp in your passport, or you may not be able to rent the car.

Before you go

A few small things that make a real difference in the mountains at this time of year.

It will be cold

In late October, mornings in Kamikochi are between -3 and +3 degrees, with frost on the ground, warming up to about 12 degrees during the day. At Senjojiki, 2,612 metres up, it will be well below freezing. Bring warm layers, gloves and a hat. This is mountain weather, not holiday-resort weather.

Shoes, and crampons

A good pair of hiking shoes is enough for every walk on the valley floors. At Senjojiki there may already be snow and ice, so pack a pair of light snow crampons that slip over your shoes, just in case.

The ETC card is booked

An ETC card comes with the rental car. It is a card that pays the motorway tolls automatically, so you do not have to stop and queue at every toll gate. The tolls are added up and paid when you return the car.

Carry cash

Mountain inns, the shuttle buses and the small shops in the old post towns often only take cash, so keep a good amount of yen on you.

Private baths

Shared hot spring baths in Japan are separated into men's and women's. A 貸切風呂 (kashikiri-buro) is a private bath you can book for the two of you. Both mountain inns have one: ask for a time slot when you check in.

Check the ropeways

Both the Komagatake and the Shinhotaka ropeways stop running in strong wind or snow. Check the forecast the night before you go and be ready to change the day's plan if needed.
